Yahoo Mail (beta)
Published by Esteban October 10th, 2006 in GeneralI couple of days ago I discovered the option to try the new yahoo mail, and I have to say that even though it’s in beta it works pretty good showing improvements on almost every aspect, and some of them are pretty impressive.
I’m not going to do a compare it with Gmail for example, and for what I’ve seen so far yahoo mail looks a bit better (at least for me). It’s going to be a quick overview of the things I found useful in my everyday life using yahoo mail.
I’ll start with the cons, the bad things I found so far because are less than the good ones. No safari support! yahoo mail beta doesn’t support safari yet, but it support almost all mayor browser out there, these screenshots were taken with firefox 1.5 using SnapNDrag.
Another thing I found a bit irritating is that instead of showing me the whole inbox, first it takes most of the main space to display, tutorials, ads and a news panel.

But I do like that even when taking just a small space at top you can clearly see how to access your inbox (now with the good things).
Cleaner design. I really like the new design, is much cleaner and up-to-date with the design trends. Everything is well organized, and it looks more like an application and it acts like one too (more below).
Tabs. uh!! yeah!!! this is a big one! Now if you double click your message you open that email in a new tab, which is really nice! when you want to take time and really read an email instead of scan it.

Another big one! Drag and Drop. As you can see, now you can drag and drop messages to your trash, Spam, sent, drafts and of course to any of your folders. This is really cool! you can even select a couple of messages like you would on your desktop (using the shift+) an drag them. Also you can use control or command (on Mac) to select different files, skipping the ones you don’t want to drag.

Right-Click. Inside the inbox you can right-click a message and get, not a browser option, but mail options (replay, forward, etc.) how cool is that?!!

RSS Feeds. If you like me, who uses safari rss reader, I don’t think you will find this part useful, but I think is a good thing normal people star using more and more.
Powered by AJAX. It seems like yahoo has implemented ajax technology to pull much of the stuff I’ve been talking about and it did it quite well.

Now for my conclusion I have to say the inevitable, if you are using yahoo, give it a try, if not give it a try too. It’s free!
I’ve been enjoying yahoo mail beta ever since, I’ll keep posting any new discoveries, and if you find something useful I didn’t mention here please add them to the comments, thanks and see you soon!

Hey hazuman,
Too bad you are having this problem. I’m not sure if I understood your question. If you are using a mac try to login with safari, it will ask you go back to the “old” yahoo mail, maybe you can retrieve your messages.
I’ll look around and see if I can help you more.
